I’ll say it plainly: the lowest connector price is not the lowest cost. I know that sounds like a supply-chain cliché, but after six years of tracking interconnect spending, I trust the pattern more than the cliché. The part that makes a board predictable is the part that actually saves money.
I’m a procurement manager at a contract electronics manufacturer. I manage an annual interconnect budget of about $800,000. That means I don’t get to be romantic about components. I have to be honest about test failures, rework, and service returns. And those hidden costs are the reason I’m now a strong supporter of Samtec Inc parts like the Samtec SSW socket family.
My position: Samtec SSW is not the cheapest option on a quote, and I still expect it to be the cheapest option in my cost-tracking system.

Everything I’d read about procurement says the same thing: get three quotes, compare delivery, calculate total cost of ownership. That advice isn’t wrong. It’s incomplete, because TCO is hard to calculate before the connector is on a board and the board is in service. Unit price differences are easy to calculate. Test yield differences aren’t.
The conventional wisdom says a socket strip is a commodity, so buy the lowest acceptable price. My experience with hundreds of orders says something different. A connector is a commodity only until it stops conducting. After that, it’s a field failure with a very different price tag.
How I Got Burned by the Cheaper Socket
They warned me about unapproved substitutes. I didn’t listen. In Q2 2024, we had a stock shortage on an approved socket. A supplier offered a similar part at 26% lower cost. Same pitch. Same pin count. Same external profile. I approved it because the CEO wanted a ship date kept, and I had two hours to make the call. That was the mistake.
Forty boards had already shipped before intermittent opens started appearing. The failure showed up after thermal cycling, not during the first pass test. The customer found it. We paid $7,100 in rework and freight, and we lost about two weeks of trust. The amount we had saved on the part: $316. That was an expensive “discount.”
That is when I stopped treating a connector as a commodity. The replacement was the same part number we should have used from the beginning: a Samtec SSW socket strip with the drawing revision and plating option specified by our engineer.
The Service Date Is Not a Quality Record
Last year, one of our field-service reports asked a strange question in a blank data field: when was this cable ready for service ()? The request didn’t say tested or approved. It just wanted a date. If we typed a date, the report would look complete. But the date would not tell anyone whether the cable had been verified, who installed it, or what test supported the installation.
I see that as a direct parallel to connector buying. If a buyer only compares price, they are asking the service-date question without the quality-record question. The real price is buried in the test history, not in the timestamp.
Why the N93 Group Is Part of My Cost Model
In our component database, approved interconnect families live inside a category we call the N93 group. It sounds like an internal code, and it is. The name started as a legacy grouping in our MRP system, but the N93 group became a practical tool. A part has to have a drawing, a known plating, a documented supplier, and a test history before a buyer can place it there.
Samtec SSW parts are tagged in the N93 group because their mating connectors, recommended footprints, and tolerances are all documented well enough to estimate manufacturing cost. That doesn’t make Samtec the only good connector manufacturer. It makes product life predictable, and predictability is what a cost controller wants.
When someone sends me a lower quote for a connector that is not in the N93 group, I don’t reject it automatically. I ask for the same level of documentation. If it doesn’t exist, I treat the part as an unknown cost, not a saving.
What About the Samtec Premium?
If you compare only the unit price, Samtec Inc may lose. I’ve received quotes for look-alike sockets that were $0.10 lower per pin. But the cost model isn't just the dollar column. The dollar column tells me what I pay the supplier. The test column tells me what I pay the production line. The service column tells me what the customer pays after the product ships.
I’d rather pay a small premium on a Samtec SSW socket than rebuild forty boards later. In most TCO models I run, the premium becomes noise if it prevents one rework event.
Also, education matters. I’d rather spend ten minutes explaining to a new buyer why the approved part number matters than deal with mismatched expectations after a recall. An informed customer asks better questions and makes faster decisions.
Ask Better Questions Before the Cable Is Ready for Service
The date stamp on a cable tells you when it entered the system. It doesn’t tell you why it deserved to be there. The same logic applies to a connector buy. A lower quote is only a lower quote until the assemblies go through thermal cycling, vibration, or years of field use.
So next time the asset-management form asks when was this cable ready for service ()? don’t just fill in the date. Attach the lot number, the test report, and the approved part number. For me, that is the difference between a cheap socket and a good design.
The cheapest connector is not the lowest cost. The connector I can trace, test, and trust is.
