Samtec Address, Sourcing Scenarios, and How to Use a Multimeter for Connector Checks

There isn't one right answer to 'How should we handle Samtec connectors?' I know that's not satisfying from someone who spends his days comparing prices and lead times. But after six years of tracking interconnect invoices at a 30-person electronics company—probably 180 orders, maybe 200, I'd have to check—I've realized the useful question is: 'Which situation am I in right now?'

There are basically three situations. The first is the bench prototype. The second is the real purchase order. The third is the receiving dock. Each one gets a different response, and the same part number can be the right part in one and the wrong part in another. That sounds obvious, but I've watched companies mess it up all the time.

Scenario 1: The bench prototype

If you're an engineer trying to prove a design, you should not be sourcing for production volume. I learned this the hard way. When I first started working with engineering teams, I assumed the low-price vendor was always the best. That led to an order of 500 connectors that we couldn't use because the plating didn't meet the spec—the datasheet said it should have, but nobody had checked a physical sample.   4. Probe adjacent pins. If it beeps when it shouldn't, you have a short or solder bridge.
  5. Wiggle the cable while the meter is beeping. If the beep stops, the contact is intermittent. That is a fail.

For a C300 part, I'd check every signal pin before installing it. For a 3310 part, I'd check adjacent pins and the end pins against ground. It takes about five minutes. A basic $15 multimeter is enough for this. You don't need a laboratory instrument to answer 'is there a continuous path between these two pins.' Also, if you're testing a board-to-board connector, try to probe from the back of the connector or use a breakout board. Pushing a probe into a mating surface can deform the contact, especially on fine-pitch parts.
