How I Route Samtec Distributors Under Tight Deadlines

Where This Approach Breaks Down

It would be dishonest to end without boundary conditions. The same rush protocol that saves you on standard catalog parts fails in two scenarios.

Custom or configured parts. If you need a non-catalog variant—special plating, custom cable length, modified jack—there's no stock to verify. The move here is Samtec's engineering support, not your distributor. They'll tell you what's realistic and sometimes offer an already-stocked alternative. Sit through that call even if it takes an hour. It's cheaper than a redesign.

High-volume quantities. For rush deliveries of 10,000+ pieces, the bottleneck isn't the distributor. It's the factory. Twenty-five units of a standard jack might sit in regional warehouses. Five thousand of the same part gets built to order. Know which quantity category you're in before you promise a date to your own customer.

The other caveat: if you need parts in-hand this afternoon, no online distributor solves that. That's a local supplier conversation, and the price reflects the immediacy. I want to say we've done that twice in four years, but don't quote me on the exact number. It's rare, it's expensive, and sometimes it's exactly what the design requires.
