The most expensive $71 I never saved
I wish I could say I calmly switched to the $892 quote and stayed on budget. It did not work that way.
The authorized distributor could still supply the parts, but standard shipping wouldn't arrive in time. So I paid $184 for next-day air. The assembly shop had already reserved their line for another job, so they charged a $386 rescheduling fee. Look, I'm not saying you should never buy components from a marketplace. I do it all the time for office supplies and even some prototypes. But for production boards with a committed build date, I now compare the worst cases instead of the unit prices. The supplier who lists all the fees up front—even when that total looks higher—usually costs less in the end. The expensive line items are visible. The other side's costs are invisible until something goes wrong.
In the end, the Samtec QSH and SSM parts were perfect. We built the 48 boards, we shipped them, and the 8110 project is still running. The part was never the issue. The issue was the part of the quote that no one wrote down.
Now I ask about that part first. It's worth a lot more than $71.
